Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is the process of a customer being directed to an online store via a link from another store. The process begins with a visitor being on one site (the affiliate) and they are encouraged by a link or banner to visit another site (the merchant.) This completes the customer process of the affiliate marketing process but the merchant then provides compensation to the affiliate for passing the customer to them.

There are different types of affiliate links with one method perhaps being of more benefit to you than the other. Some links are created so the merchant pays the affiliate every time a visitor clicks on their link to come through to the merchant’s site. A rival method is where the merchant only pays after the customer has came through an affiliate’s link and then made a purchase. This method is regularly referred to as Cost-Per-Sale (CPS) and is the predominant form of compensation for affiliates. It is obvious that this is beneficial to the merchant as the cost is being offset with guaranteed sales, which will help reduce marketing costs.

Affiliate marketing shouldn’t be used instead of other forms of marketing; it should be used to compliment existing promotional activities being undertaken by the firm. No matter how many affiliate links a merchant may have, if no one visits the affiliate site, the merchant will see no sales. However, as an additional cost-effective form of marketing, there is no doubt that affiliate marketing provides major benefits for all parties, including the customer.

Although the process of setting up an affiliate link is extremely simple, many merchants use the experience of a third party to set up links, track sales and create billing information. This allows the merchant to focus on their core activities but it also allows them to take advantage of the experience of the third party. The third party may have a database of potential affiliates which will be perfect to link with the merchant. If the product or service is of a niche variety, this form of marketing can allow for a focused approach to customers. By directly pitching the link at customers who would have an interest in the product and trading on the reputation of the affiliate, it is possible for the merchant to greatly improve their own status and reputation within the industry.
